Some people are prepared to argue against retribution as a concept, even when applied fairly. This page has been archived and is no longer updated. Deterrence Capital punishment is often justified with the argument that by executing convicted murderers, we will deter would-be murderers from killing people. Nonetheless there is also a small but increasingly vociferous abolitionist movement in Japan. I would much rather risk the former.
